Nine Months Later: How Challah Brought a Community Together

Nine months ago, on October 7th, our world changed. The sense of security we once took for granted was shattered. Despite the chaos, I felt a deep need to contribute, even in a small way. Through Maibakery, my small business, I found a way to help. With the support of friends, we decided to bake challot for displaced families, delivering them to hotels for their Shabbat dinners. We believed that a simple, handmade challah could bring a touch of home to those who needed it most.

Then, something extraordinary happened. A local pizza store owner, who had survived the Nova Festival, offered his pizza oven for our baking. His generous act, despite all he had been through, was truly inspiring.

Together with many volunteers and the amazing pizza store owner, we baked 100 challot. It was a genuine community effort. Each challah was made with love and a profound sense of solidarity. This experience showed us that challah is not just regular bread; it represents the limitless potential to bring people together and offer comfort in difficult times.

But there's more to the story. My family from Kibbutz Mefalsim, displaced and staying at a hotel, welcomed us with open arms during this chaotic time. They were in shock, overwhelmed but grateful to be alive. They introduced me to other kibbutz members who were also displaced. Everyone was deeply thankful for the warm challot that reached them on such a dark day.

It’s incredible to think that nine months have passed since that dark day. Our thoughts are always with those still in Gaza, the brave souls defending our land, and the hostages still held. We remember those who lost loved ones, the communities in the north under constant threat, and the soldiers fighting on multiple fronts. This reality highlights the ongoing struggle and the importance of our unity and support.

This journey was about more than baking bread. It was about coming together, supporting one another, and finding strength in unity. Our country showed immense solidarity, and we are proud to have been a part of it.

I started with Maibakery believing in the power of community and the difference we can make when we come together. Here's to the incredible spirit of our people. May we continue to uplift each other in times of need.

Am Israel Chai! 🇮🇱
